Week 2: White House Sketches

Matthias (Uelsby, Germany) writes of this house:
"My/Our house from the second sketch used to be the imperial post office ( "Kaiserliches Postamt"). It was build in 1904 and operated till 1976.
The Emperor of Germany back than wanted to improve the post infrastructure and a village or town could apply for a post office if they wanted. It was quite lucrative too, since the building was payed by the state and it provided work for three villagers (post master, assistant and postman). The only requirement was that there has to be a certain amount of mail coming in to the current post office (as in some farmer who collected everything and brought it to the next real office).
So at a predefined day an imperial official comes to the village and counts all mail for a day and then decides if it is enough to warrant a post office. So the whole village organized that everybody is sending their mail on that day. Private letters, business correspondence for a week, and advertising mail from all businesses in the surrounding area was collected and brought in to the office at that day. And they got their post office :), must have been a quiet job for the post master after that."
